Why Do Golf Course Superintendents Fear Thunderstorms in Arkansas

Why Do Golf Course Superintendents Fear Thunderstorms in Arkansas?

Posted on August 20, 2026August 23, 2026 by Dennis Simpson

A summer thunderstorm sounds like good news for a golf course. Rain means moisture, cooler temperatures, and less irrigation—right? Not always. In Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, a 95°F afternoon storm can create a serious turf-management challenge.

In this episode of Hot Springs Village Venues, Dennis Simpson sits down with former General Manager John Paul to explore the science, history, and daily work behind maintaining world-class golf courses in Arkansas’ demanding Transition Zone.

What Makes the Arkansas Transition Zone So Difficult for Golf?

The Transition Zone sits between areas where cool-season and warm-season grasses thrive. That makes turf management especially challenging. Hot summers, unpredictable weather, humidity, clay-based soils, and changing temperatures can put enormous stress on golf greens.

Historically, Bentgrass was used on many greens, but maintaining it through Arkansas summers can be difficult. Heat and humidity create conditions where disease, shallow roots, and excessive moisture can quickly damage turf.

That is why some Hot Springs Village courses have moved toward Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda, a warm-season grass better suited to intense summer heat.

Why Can Afternoon Rain Damage a Bentgrass Green?

Rain itself isn’t necessarily the problem. The combination of heat, humidity, wet turf, and poor airflow can be.

After a hot afternoon thunderstorm, Bentgrass may remain stressed while disease pressure increases. Pythium and other turf diseases can become major concerns when conditions stay warm and wet.

Superintendents therefore have to monitor weather conditions constantly rather than simply reacting to rainfall.

Why Is “Cooling the Dirt” Different From Watering Grass?

One of the most surprising lessons from this episode is that irrigation isn’t always about giving the grass more water.

During extreme heat, turf managers may use syringing—applying a light amount of water to help cool the plant and surrounding surface. This is very different from deep irrigation intended to replenish soil moisture.

The distinction matters because overwatering can create another problem: saturated conditions that encourage disease while weakening root systems.

How Did Hot Springs Village Change Its Golf Greens?

The conversion from Bentgrass to Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda is a complex process involving turf science, construction standards, drainage, soil conditions, labor, and long-term maintenance.

Some greens require extensive preparation because existing clay-based systems may not meet the specifications needed for modern Bermuda greens. The process can take months, requiring careful planning while keeping an entire golf operation running.

The Village’s eight courses make this challenge even more significant.

What Does It Take to Keep a Golf Course Green?

Maintaining championship-quality turf is far more labor-intensive than simply running sprinklers.

The episode discusses greens that can require hours of hand-watering and constant monitoring, especially during extreme weather. Staffing, course size, architecture, grass type, irrigation, disease management, and weather all influence the workload.

The legacy of Tom Heffer and the work of John Paul provide important context for understanding how turf-management practices have evolved over the years.

Why Are Hot Springs Village Golf Courses Designed So Differently?

Golf-course architecture is another major theme. The work of designers such as Tom Clark helped create courses that respond to the Village’s natural terrain.

Instead of treating every hole the same, the courses use elevation, lakes, mountain views, housing layouts, and changing landscapes to create distinctive experiences.

The result is a combination of golf views, lake views, and mountain elevation that reflects the broader vision behind Hot Springs Village.

What Will You Learn From This Episode?

From thunderstorm management and Bentgrass disease pressure to Bermuda conversion and course architecture, this conversation reveals the engineering and expertise behind Hot Springs Village golf.

You’ll discover why weather watching is as important as irrigation, why more water isn’t always the answer, and how decades of turf-management experience continue to shape the Village’s courses.

Whether you’re a golfer, homeowner, turf professional, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes, this episode offers a fascinating look at the science required to keep Arkansas golf courses playable and beautiful.

Watch the episode to discover the turf science, weather challenges, and design decisions that keep Hot Springs Village golf courses thriving.
